Peter Maher is a founding Director of the Endosurgery (minimal access surgery) Unit at the Mercy Hospital for Women. He is a recognised world leader in minimal access surgery (keyhole) and is regularly invited overseas to demonstrate and teach the specialised techniques. He is a past President of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society and the Chairman of the Training Committee of the International Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy. He is the Co-Founder and a director of both the Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia and The Melbourne Fibroid Clinic.

He performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy in Australia in 1990. Since that time he has adapted laparoscopic techniques to treat many conditions including severe endometriosis and pelvic floor prolapse with/without urinary incontinence.

He first published on endometrial ablation in 1989. This was a new non-invasive treatment for women with heavy periods - a method that avoids hysterectomy in up to 85% of women who have a hormonal imbalance or small fibroids as the primary cause.
