Gynec Endoscopy Today by Bash Goolab, MD
DEAR FRIENDS
Herewith a brief summary of the ISGE Regional Meeting in Chennai March 2011. The Chennai ISGE Laparoscopic conference will be memorable one for many reasons. the format, the academic programme, the venue and the leisure activities were totally different to the previous ISGE conferences.
The venue was at a superb seaside resort away from the hustle and bustle of the city noise and pollution, preventing participants running out of conference venue to their private practices
One of the most important positive change was no parallel sessions during the Congress works. This format was well suited for a regional meeting so that the participants got the maximum benefit for the lecture programme. The theme of this regional conference of the ISGE was “Simplify Endoscopy”. In this era of developing endoscopic skills and numerous gadgets the average gynecologist seems to have been left behind. A rational approach of what we can do and what we should do has been successfully presented.
The invited faculty presented superb lectures but of note was the extremely high calibre delivered by the local faculty. It is important to note that in the large cities of India the standard of laparoscopic surgery is very high.
PRECONFERENCE SUTURING WORKSHOP
The preconference laparoscopic suturing course was very successful thanks to the faculty represented by dr Ornella Sizzi, dr Alfonso Rossetti, prof Bruno van Herendael, prof Prashant Mangeshikar, prof Bhaskar Goolab and the host dr Kurian Joseph.
A special thanks to Karl Stortz Germany and their local agents who put in tremendous time and energy to facilitate the smooth running of workshop
Dr Kurian Joseph had the facility of the large Conference Hall offered to him free of charge by the University of Madras because we provided a free suturing workshop for the post graduate gynaecology residents.
The second suturing workshop was conducted for gynaecologists in private practice. The feedback received from participants was that the workshop definitely elevated their skills in laparoscopic suturing.
One of the highlight of this conference was the preconference Live Surgery conducted from the Madras Public Hospital to the auditorium at the conference venue, with approximately 350 participants interacting with the international and local faculty performing live surgery. There were approximately 20 operations performed from 2 theatres covering very operation that is available in the gynaecology syllabus. Of great interest were the live transmissions from Chicago (dr Chuck Miller and dr Duncan Turner), transmission possible thanks to a grant from J&J and the one from Pune-India where dr Shailesh Putambekar eloquently performed radical hysterectomy with lymph node dissection .
The Chennai conference also provided an opportunity to conduct a formal ISGE board meeting. The meeting was very constructive in charting the new vision of ISGE and the road ahead .
YOURS SINCERELY
